THE GOLDEN SWAMP

THE POURING GOLD: Since the mid-1990s everything known by human kind has been pouring out of libraries, museums, universities, laboratories, archives, and elsewhere, into the Internet.

THE FLOATING CANS: Single webpages and/or small collections of pages float and bob about on the Internet, mixed in with commerce, entertainment, personal pages, and other stuff.

THE FROG ACTION: Finding the best of the knowledge is a bit like sticking frogs in a swamp. Search engines take jabs; they do not link related pages.

FIGURATIVE SWAMPS

The term "golden swamp" was coined by a Dutch intellectual to describe Amsterdam during its 17th century golden age. It was a pinnacle time for commerce, science, religion, and art.

Like Amsterdam then, the Internet is a fluid, bustling attractor of the monetary and intellectual riches of the world, along with some unsavory material as well.

Also like Holland, individuals who ply the Internet are free to participate, thrive, and embark to travel the globe.
